At St Benedict’s, we study French as a Foreign Language. We follow a sequence of lessons using CUSP to support teaching. Our intent is to support our children in developing their understanding and a love of a second language. To equip them and give them the tools to support them when transitioning into secondary school. We aim to do this through fun and engaging lessons.

CUSP French has been intentionally crafted based on the principles of evidence-led practice, ensuring a dedicated emphasis on the high-quality development of children as linguists. The curriculum revisits core study areas throughout, with each unit concentrating on essential elements such as phonics, grammatical structures, reading, writing, oracy, and vocabulary. CUSP French is a comprehensive resource designed for both teachers and students, fostering consistency in French instruction across the school. It equips teachers, even those without prior knowledge of French, with the necessary subject expertise to effectively convey the content.

The French curriculum is designed to meet the needs of young linguists in the contemporary world. Deliberate emphasis is placed on key areas to ensure that students acquire knowledge and language relevant to engaging with crucial and practical topics like the environment, wellbeing, and travel. The curriculum not only focuses on vocabulary acquisition but also on the fundamental components essential for learning a new language.

Each block includes study of key MFL linguistic concepts and previously learnt language concepts to enable pupils to build on known themes and vocabulary. The core content overview outlines the substantive and disciplinary knowledge and key vocabulary that pupils will learn throughout each block of study. This includes the vocabulary, phonics and grammatical constructs that pupils will learn, as well as the opportunities to develop their reading, writing and oracy skills.

The National Curriculum for maintained schools in England stipulates that the teaching of foreign
languages is required at key stage 2 (ages 7 11). This can be in any modern foreign language (MFL).
.
Key aspects of study that are explicitly referenced in the National Curriculum for MFL include:
• vocabulary acquisition
• varied oracy opportunities, including engagement in conversation
• phonics and accurate pronunciation
• grammatical knowledge
• reading and listening for meaning
• sentence composition
• simple writing tasks.
These are all carefully represented in the CUSP French curriculum.

Revisiting is inherently built into the architecture of the French curriculum. This can be seen in
many places, such as:
• between individual blocks in each year group on the long-term sequence
• within blocks in the Remember part of each lesson
• in the quizzing that can be used throughout, at the end of and after a block of study.

Teachers should seek to revisit key language as frequently as possible. This could be through normal classroom interactions, for example greeting pupils, telling the time, discussing classroom equipment or when giving instructions. This will help pupils to remember knowledge that they have learnt during their French lessons.

🎃🍂 Pumpkin Soup Day in the Nursery! 🍂🎃

First of all, we’re sorry for the late post! 🙈📱 We’ve had a few technical difficulties, but we’re back and ready to share all the fun! 💻✨

🌟 What a fantastic Friday we had in nursery! 🌟

Our little chefs 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 got busy in the kitchen, taking it in turns to cut up the pumpkins 🎃, chop the carrots 🥕 and potatoes 🥔, and spread their own butter on their bread 🧈🍞.

There were so many wonderful skills being developed and practised, including fine motor skills ✋, hand-eye coordination 👀, turn-taking 🤝, independence 💪 and learning about healthy foods 🥦🍎.

The children worked so hard, and their efforts were rewarded with a delicious bowl of homemade pumpkin soup 🥣🎃 served with crusty bread 🍞😋.

💛 A HUGE thank you to some of our lovely parents who kindly supplied dairy-free ingredients for one of our soups 🥛🚫 and homemade bread for our afternoon children 🍞🥰. Your kindness and support are always so appreciated! 💕

We were absolutely amazed by how many children were willing to give the soup a try! 🥹👏 What fantastic little food explorers we have! 🌟 Some children even finished their entire bowl! 🥣🙌 We were so proud of everyone for being brave, trying something new and giving it their best go! 💚🎉

🍁🦔 Our autumn adventures continued! 🦔🍁

The children used our beautiful autumn treasures 🍂🍁🌰 to create a cosy little home for our class hedgehog 🦔🏡. They also enjoyed getting creative and decorating their very own pumpkins 🎃🎨. We had so much fun exploring the colours, textures and treasures that autumn brings! 🍂✨

🥰 What a wonderful way to finish the week. We hope all our wonderful families have a fantastic half term! 🎃🍂 Enjoy a well-deserved break, have lots of fun and make some special memories together. 🧡👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

🍂🎃 Reception’s Autumn Adventures! 🍁🍂

What a wonderful time we’ve had in Reception exploring all things autumn! 🧡 Our little learners have been busy discovering the magic of the season through lots of fun, hands-on activities. 🌰🍃

🔢 Counting conkers – developing our number skills as we counted, matched and explored quantities.

🎃 Pumpkin rolling – making predictions, testing our ideas and discovering what happens when we give a pumpkin a little push! Lots of learning and giggles along the way!

🍁 Comparing and sorting leaves – looking closely at their colours, shapes and sizes, spotting similarities and differences, and exploring the wonderful changes happening in the natural world around us.

We’ve seen our little learners embracing the joy of learning! We are so proud of the way the children learn through play, learn from one another and approach each new adventure with such enthusiasm! 🌟

As we finish school today for our half-term break, we wish all our lovely Reception families a happy, restful and fun-filled holiday! Enjoy making special memories, spending precious time together and perhaps discovering a few more autumn treasures along the way! 🍂🍄

🙏 God bless everyone, keep safe, and have a wonderful half term! 🙏

🐦🌿 Mini Vinnies – See, Think, Do! 🌿🐦

Our Mini Vinnies have been busy making eco-friendly bird feeders as part of the Year of St Francis, who showed such love and care for all of God’s creation. 💚

Inspired by our Mini Vinnies motto, See, Think, Do, the children have been: 👀 Seeing the beauty of nature and the wildlife around us. 💭 Thinking about how we can care for God’s creation and protect our environment. 🙌 Doing something positive by creating eco-friendly bird feeders to help our feathered friends! 🐦

Through this activity, our Mini Vinnies are putting their faith into action and showing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. 🌍💚
Thanks to Father Emmanuel for his help today.

“Praise be to you, my Lord, through all your creatures.” – St Francis of Assisi 🙏
