At St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, we want our pupils to develop knowledge, skills and attributes which keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare them for life and work in the future. We aspire for our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the school and wider community. We live in a constantly changing and evolving society, where our children face an increasing amount of safeguarding issues. It is therefore important that we teach our pupils high quality PSHE lessons which give them the skills they need to keep safe and healthy.

Providing learning opportunities that:

  • promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils;
  • prepare pupils with opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for their next stage;
  • promote Fundamental British values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

We value Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. To ensure progression, we use Ten:Ten, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to the needs of our children. The Ten:Ten programme offers a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

Programme Structure

In Life to the Full, we follow a four-stage structure which is repeated and developed across four different learning stages:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage is aimed at Nursery and Reception
  • Key Stage One is aimed at Years 1 and 2
  • Lower Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 3 and 4
  • Upper Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 5 and 6

Within each learning stage, there are three Modules which are

based on the Model Catholic RSE Curriculum:

  • Created and Loved by God
  • Created to Love Others
  • Created to Live in Community

Each Module is then broken down into Units of Work.

Within each Unit there are a number of planned sessions which are to be led in the classroom.

Through long, medium and short term planning that is progressive and cohesive across the year groups and provides opportunities to revisit previous learning:

  • All teachers record pupils PSHE learning in a PSHE floor book
  • Teachers are aware of the learning outcomes that are taught
  • All teachers ensure the learning outcomes are met through their planning
  • All teachers use Ten:Ten to teach the RSE lessons

Pupils will:

  • Pupils will have resilience
  • Pupils will be aware of their mental and emotional health and be able to talk about how they feel
  • Pupils will have knowledge about how to keep themselves safe and healthy both emotionally and physically
  • Pupils have awareness of British Values, protected characteristics and diversity
  • Pupils have an understanding of Relationships and Sex education
  • Pupils will be prepared for their next stage
  • Pupils will have financial capability
